An incredibly talented artist recently approached us to provide security for the opening night of his art exhibition. We don't have many of these requests, and we were shocked to learn why we were required at the show.
Samo, the artist behind the incredible exhibition, had been receiving a lot of transphobic attacks online towards the build-up to his show and book launch, even to the point where he felt members of his community were targeting him. They had been stating that this work was inappropriate and tried their hardest to stop the show. With transphobic media appearing not only online but also across the city he lived in, this became a very tough mental challenge that proved to Samo how vital it was to make sure his voice and work were heard/seen.
Only inspiring the artist further, he decided to contact us at Stag Security and see if we could secure the venue for him and the wonderful community that would be arriving that evening. For us, it was a no-brainer. There was no way we would let a group of people feel vulnerable and scared because they wanted to express how they felt by being themselves or in the form of art.
Arriving that evening, we saw what a fantastic group of people they all were and how robust their community was. None of them letting the abuse prior put them off attending a hugely successful night. We pride ourselves on supporting and giving back to our local community, and it was no different here. Each person who attended was there to encourage, support and empower one another.
We are so happy that we could help Samo and his mission to share his art and the education that many people desperately need. We hope anyone else who feels threatened or vulnerable for just being themself can turn to someone for support, and if you can't, we would be more than willing to help.
